Narrowboat women

At the July meeting our 4 speakers were from the Waterways Museum in Gloucester. They talked to us about the life of the womenfolk on the narrowboats when canal transport was at its peak.  The ladies were in the traditional costume worn by the women and they showed us how these were made particularly the very fancy bonnets.  The women used to make rugs and belts while they were steering the boats.  The living area in the working boats was only 10 foot by 7 where the family cooked lived and slept.
