Helping Hedgehogs

Members of Avening WI are busy women.  We are involved in all kinds of groups and have many responsibilities at home and work.  We travel, enjoy evenings at the theatre and concerts, we go walking and visit our friends.  Occasionally we are needed to care for our families and sometimes, we need a little care ourselves.  Though we try to keep the second Thursday in the month for ourselves, from time to time our best intentions come to nought and last week was one of those times.

Sad to say, those who couldn’t make our May meeting missed a treat.  Annie from Help a Hedgehog Hospital brought along one of her charges, who proved to be very friendly and a little more active than some of his friends.  The hospital cared for more than 90 hedgehogs over the past Winter and aims to return all of these delightful creatures to the same place as they were found once they are well enough.  Di and Pearl were quick to take up the invitation to take a closer look at this little chap, who is expected to be released and live independently again very shortly indeed.

In other news, we’ve got a bye into the next round of the Skittles Plate competition, so will use the opportunity to have a friendly practice match with our friends from Nailsworth WI on the 8th June at the Social Club.  A Bring and Share supper will make the evening fun.

Our coach to Bristol Blue Glass is nearly full and reports from those who went on the GFWI trip are universally positive – we’re looking forward to it!
